Japan movie begins in Sannomiya Station and describe Seita, ragged and starved to death. A janitor comes and digs through his, and finds a candy tin containing the ashes and bones. He threw out, and from there springs the spirit of Setsuko, Seita, and clouds of fireflies. The spirit of Seita continue telling their story, which, in essence, an extended flashback to Japan by the end of World War II, during the bombings of Kobe.

flashback begins with American B-29s, a symbol of the power of the American war machine is released by the Japanese, the Japanese flew overhead theatening really helpless. Setsuko and Seita, the two siblings, are left to secure their homes and possessions, allowing their mothers, who suffer from heart complaints, to move into bomb shelters. They were caught off-guard by dropping firebombs in their environment, and although they survived without injury, their mother was caught in an air strike and died of his burns. Having nowhere else to go, Setsuko and Seita's aunt moved away, allowing them to stay, but convincing Seita to sell his mother's kimonos for rice. While living with relatives, Seita goes out to pick up the remaining stock he was buried in the ground before the bombing. He gave it all to her aunt, but hides a small tin of fruit drops, the iconic recurring throughout the film. their aunt continued to eat and where they lived but because they gradually begin to run out of rice and food, she suddenly became cold and upset. During breakfast one day, he publicly commented on how they do not do anything to get the food she cooked for them or help around the house.
Seita and Setsuko finally decide to leave and move into an abandoned bomb shelter. What started as an optimistic new lease on life gradually grew grim as they ran out of rice, and Seita is forced to steal crops from local farmers and looted houses during an air raid. When he was caught stealing sugar, he realized a desperate and taking Setsuko getting sick to the doctor, who told her that Setsuko suffering from malnutrition, but does not offer any help or advice. In a panic, Seita withdraw all the money left in their mother's bank account, but while in the bank he studied Japanese surrendered unconditionally to the Allies and the possibility of his father's death. He returned to the shelter with a large amount of food, only to find dying Setsuko hallucinating, sucking ohajiki as if they were drops of fruit. Seita Setsuko offers 'rice balls' which is actually just a lump of dirt. Seita gave him a bite of watermelon and hurried to cook food, but he "did not wake up." Seita using supplies donated to him by the farmer to cremate him, and put some of his ashes in a tin of fruit accompanied by a photograph his father until his death in a train station on September 21 1945.
At the end of the film, the spirit of Seita and Setsuko looks, no longer in rags and thin but healthy and well-dressed, sitting side by side as they look down on the modern city of Kobe.
